The paper explores key aspects of the publishing process, highlighting issues like limited knowledge access, systemic biases and a lack of diversity among contributors. It emphasizes the need to actively seek and celebrate diverse voices to enhance scholarly discourse. Furthermore, the study highlights the rapid transformation of scholarly publishing driven by technological advancements and advocates for open-access models, innovative dissemination methods and emerging technologies. The study concludes that, in order to advance scholarly publishing with equity, empowerment and evolution, a collaborative approach involving authors and editors is essential. This enriches global academic discourse, fosters inclusivity and benefits both researchers and society.

INTRODUCTION

Scholarly publishing plays a pivotal role in disseminating scientific knowledge, fostering innovation and driving advancements in various fields¹. However, there are inherent challenges and disparities within the current system that hinder equitable access and opportunities for scientific writers². This concept note aims to propose a comprehensive approach to advancing scholarly publishing by focusing on equity, empowerment and evolution for scientific writers³.

Traditional scholarly publishing, for all its merits, has faced mounting criticism in recent years. This criticism is not directed at the fundamental purpose of this venerable institution, but rather at the inequities and imbalances that have come to define it. There’s a growing recognition that the traditional model falls short when it comes to equity, empowerment and evolution. All too often, it leaves scientific writers and editors on unequal footing, hampers access to knowledge and neglects the voices of those historically marginalized.

The aim of this article is to provide actionable insights into how the thriving principles of equity, empowerment and evolution can be realized, benefitting all those engaged in the scholarly communication process.

The primary objectives of this initiative are as follows:

	•	Promote equity in scholarly publishing by addressing barriers faced by underrepresented researchers, including gender, race, ethnicity, geographical location and institutional affiliation4
	•	Empower scientific writers by providing resources, mentorship and training opportunities that enhance their research, writing and publishing skills5
	•	Foster the evolution of scholarly publishing by embracing emerging technologies, open access models and innovative dissemination methods that increase accessibility and impact of scientific research6,7

Evolution of scholarly publishing: The rapid transformation of scholarly publishing is driven by technological advancements. Embracing this evolution is crucial. It can be achieved by adopting the following:

	•	Explore innovative dissemination methods such as preprints, data-sharing platforms and multimedia formats to enhance the visibility and engagement of scientific publications
