Copyright and Licensing

Trends in Scholarly Publishing (TSP) upholds the authors' copyright for all published articles. All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) . Under this license, authors retain full copyright of their work, and anyone may read, download, share, and reuse the material provided proper attribution is given to the original publication. These terms ensure that research is freely accessible while ensuring that authors receive appropriate recognition for their contributions.

Exceptions to the Copyright Policy

The default license for all articles published in TSP is CC BY 4.0 . Exceptions to this policy are rare and may only be considered when specifically required by a funder's mandate. Any exception will be clearly indicated on the published article.

Reproducing Published Material from Other Sources

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material (e.g., figures, tables, text extracts, photographs) for which they do not hold copyright or that is not covered by an open license. Permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder, usually the publisher of the source work.

The following uses require permission:

  • Reproduction of work originally published by another publisher when copyright was not retained by the author
  • Use of significant portions of another author's work, either from a single source or multiple sources
  • Reuse of tables, graphs, charts, schemes, and artworks that are unaltered or only slightly modified
  • Use of photographs where copyright is not held by the submitting author

The following uses do not require permission:

  • Reconstruction of a table using data published elsewhere (with proper citation, e.g., "Data from..." or "Adapted from...")
  • Reasonably short quotations (fair use) with appropriate citation
  • Completely redrawn and substantially altered graphs, charts, schemes, or artworks

Obtaining Permission

To avoid delays in publication, authors should seek necessary permissions as early as possible. TSP cannot publish materials from other sources without documented permission. If the copyright holder provides preferred acknowledgment wording, authors should use it. If no guidance is given, the following style should be applied:

"Reproduced with permission from [author], [book/journal title]; published by [publisher], [year]."

This acknowledgment should appear at the end of the caption of the relevant table, figure, or scheme.
